The Past Continuous describes a longer action that was in progress at a moment in the past — often when something else happened..

1What is it?

The Past Continuous describes a longer action that was in progress at a moment in the past — often when something else happened.

2Why do we use it?

It makes stories vivid: I was walking home when it started to rain. Without it, stories sound like a list.

3The simple rule

Was / were + verb-ing. Use it for the background action; use Simple Past for the short action that interrupts.

4Formula

was / were + verbing  ·  “was doing… when… did”
I was sleepingHe was workingYou were eatingShe was cookingWe were playingIt was rainingThey were waitingAmma was calling

5Easy examples

I was sleeping.
They were playing.
It was raining.
What were you doing?

6Everyday examples

I was watching TV when you called.
She was driving, so she didn’t answer.
We were having dinner at eight.
Were you sleeping? Sorry!

7Kerala and India examples

I was waiting for the bus when it started pouring.
Everyone was watching the match at the tea shop.
We were travelling to Wayanad when the car broke down.
Amma was making payasam while I set the table.

8Common mistakes

I was go to school.
I was going to school.
Why: Was + verb-ing.
When you called, I cooked.
When you called, I was cooking.
Why: Background action → Past Continuous.
They was playing.
They were playing.
Why: They → were.
