Past Perfect
Use had + past participle to show which of two past actions happened first.

Goal: Use had + past participle to show which of two past actions happened first.
The Past Perfect shows an action that happened before another past action. “When I arrived, the train had left.” — the train left first, then I arrived. Form: had + past participle. Use it with when, before, after, by the time, and in reported speech. If the order is obvious (first…, then…), Simple Past is enough.

The film had started when we arrived.
She had already eaten, so she wasn’t hungry.
By the time I called, he had left.
I had never seen the sea before I moved to Kollam.
They had finished the sadya before the guests came.

When I arrived, the train left. (meaning: before I got there)
When I arrived, the train had left.
I had went.
I had gone.
I had eaten yesterday. (single event)
I ate yesterday. — one past event → Simple Past
