Born in 1955 and adopted as a baby, he grew up in California and later dropped out of Reed College.
The challenge
After co-founding Apple in 1976, he was forced out of the company in 1985.
The turning point
He started NeXT and bought the studio that became Pixar, which went on to make the first fully computer-animated feature film.
The journey
Apple bought NeXT and he returned in 1997, leading products such as the iMac, iPod and iPhone.
The impact
He is remembered for his focus on design and simplicity. He died in 2011.
