Where it began

Born in 1937 in Bombay, he was largely raised by his grandmother after his parents separated.

The challenge

Joining the family group in 1962, he started on the shop floor at Tata Steel rather than in a senior office.

The turning point

He became chairman of Tata Sons in 1991, just as India's economy was opening up.

The journey

The group made major acquisitions including Tetley, Corus and Jaguar Land Rover.

The impact

He was admired for his humility and philanthropy through the Tata trusts. He passed away in 2024.
