Born in Skopje in 1910, she left home at 18 to become a nun and was sent to India.
The challenge
She chose to leave the comfort of teaching to serve people in severe poverty, with few resources.
The turning point
In 1950 she founded the Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata.
The journey
The organisation opened homes for the sick, dying, orphaned and abandoned, and spread to many countries.
The impact
She received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 and the Bharat Ratna in 1980.
