Where it began
Born in 1891 in Mhow, in present-day Madhya Pradesh, into a community that faced untouchability under the caste system.
The challenge
As a child he experienced exclusion at school and in daily life simply because of his caste.
The turning point
Education became his path forward. He earned degrees from Columbia University and the London School of Economics, and qualified as a barrister.
The journey
He worked as a lawyer, teacher, writer and political leader, campaigning against caste discrimination and for the rights of marginalised communities.
The impact
He chaired the Drafting Committee of the Indian Constitution and was independent India's first Law Minister. He was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1990.
