Basic conjunctions

Join ideas with and, but, or, because, so.

Goal: Join ideas with and, but, or, because, so.

Conjunctions join words or sentences. And = adding. But = contrast. Or = choice. Because = reason. So = result. “I was tired, so I slept.” “I slept because I was tired.” Notice: because gives the reason, so gives the result.

2Examples

I like tea and coffee.
It’s hot, but I’m happy.
Tea or coffee?
I stayed home because it rained.Reason
It rained, so I stayed home.Result
She is small but strong.

3Common mistakes

I was late because of I missed the bus.
I was late because I missed the bus. — because + sentence; because of + noun
It rained. So that I stayed.
It rained, so I stayed.
