Why was the Great Wall of China built?
1Read
The Great Wall is not one wall but many, built over 2,000 years by different Chinese rulers. Joined together, the walls stretch more than 20,000 kilometres.
They were built to stop raiders from the grasslands to the north. Horse-riding nomads could strike fast and vanish; a wall slowed them, and watchtowers let soldiers send smoke signals along the line within hours.
The wall was also a border for trade and taxes. Gates in the wall became checkpoints on the Silk Road.
Two famous claims are false. The wall cannot be seen from space with the naked eye — it is long but very narrow. And it was not one continuous project; most of what tourists visit today was built in the Ming dynasty, 400 to 600 years ago.
