The Lighthouse Keeper’s Secret
When her grandfather falls ill, Ana must find the courage to keep the light burning through the storm.
Ages 9–12 · 9 pages · Lesson: CourageOn a rocky island where the sea met the sky, twelve-year-old Ana lived with her grandfather, the keeper of the old lighthouse.
Every night, Grandfather climbed the spiral stairs to light the great lamp, guiding ships safely past the jagged rocks below.
One stormy evening, Grandfather fell ill with a fever. "The light must stay lit tonight," he whispered weakly. "Ships are depending on it."
Ana had never climbed the stairs alone. Her hands trembled as she looked up at the tower, now hidden in swirling grey clouds.
But she thought of the sailors out on the dark water, trusting the light to guide them home. Taking a deep breath, she began to climb.
The wind howled and the old wooden stairs creaked beneath her feet. Step by step, she pushed through her fear, all the way to the top.
With shaking hands, Ana lit the great lamp exactly as Grandfather had taught her. The beam swept out across the churning sea.
Far out on the water, a small fishing boat spotted the light and steered safely away from the rocks, just in time.
By morning, the storm had passed. Grandfather, feeling better, climbed up to find Ana asleep beside the still-glowing lamp. He smiled — the island had a new keeper.
Courage isn't about not being afraid — it's about doing the right thing even when you are.
Talk about it
Ask your child: What happened first? Who was kind? What would you do? Then let them retell the story in their own words.
